Workshop 3: Budgeting Like a Pro
Managing Weekly and Monthly Income
Having more money doesn’t automatically mean having more control.
For many young footballers, a professional contract brings financial opportunities that arrive much earlier than they do for most people. Alongside a regular salary may come appearance fees, win bonuses, sponsorship income and new financial responsibilities.
Without a plan, it’s surprisingly easy for spending to grow just as quickly as earnings.
This workshop helps players build practical budgeting skills that fit around the realities of professional football. Rather than focusing on restrictions or spreadsheets, it introduces simple habits that help players stay organised, plan ahead and enjoy the rewards of their career with greater confidence.
Budgeting isn’t about limiting choices. It’s about creating the freedom to make better ones.
-
One of the biggest misconceptions about budgeting is that it’s only necessary when money is tight.
In reality, the opposite is often true.
As income increases, so do financial commitments. Cars become more expensive, housing costs increase, travel becomes more frequent and new opportunities begin to emerge. Without understanding where money is going, it’s easy to lose track of spending and drift away from long-term goals.
Professional football can also bring fluctuations in income throughout the season. Bonuses, contract changes and additional earnings can make it difficult to build consistency without a simple financial plan.
This workshop helps players understand how to manage today’s income whilst preparing for tomorrow’s opportunities, giving them greater confidence and reducing unnecessary financial stress.
-
During this practical and interactive workshop, players explore the building blocks of effective money management.
Topics include:
Understanding fixed, variable and discretionary spending.
Creating a realistic monthly budget.
Managing changing income throughout the season.
Planning ahead for larger purchases.
Building healthy saving habits alongside everyday spending.
Developing simple systems that make budgeting easy to maintain.
The focus is on creating practical routines that work in everyday life rather than complicated budgeting methods.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
Why budgeting remains important regardless of income.
The difference between fixed, variable and discretionary spending.
How changing income can affect financial planning.
Be able to
Build a realistic weekly or monthly budget.
Track spending and adjust when circumstances change.
Make more informed day-to-day financial decisions.
Feel
More organised and in control of their finances.
Better prepared to manage changes in income.
More confident making financial decisions that support both their current lifestyle and future goals.
-
Every discussion is centred around situations players regularly experience throughout their football journey.
Examples include:
Signing a first professional contract.
Managing bonuses and performance-related payments.
Renting or buying a first home.
Paying for a first car and ongoing living costs.
Balancing personal spending whilst supporting family members.
Wondering where money has gone despite earning a good salary.
These real-world scenarios help players understand how budgeting supports the financial decisions they’ll continue making throughout their career.
Continuing the Learning
Creating a budget is only the beginning. Developing positive financial habits comes from applying them consistently over time.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
