Every player should understand how they’re paid.
Signing a professional contract is one of the biggest milestones in a player’s career. Alongside the excitement comes a whole new financial world, with payslips, tax codes, National Insurance, pension contributions, bonuses and contract terminology that many young players have never encountered before.
For some, opening their first payslip raises more questions than answers.
This workshop is designed to remove that uncertainty. It explains how professional footballers are paid, why deductions are made and how contracts influence take-home pay, giving players the confidence to understand their finances and ask the right questions whenever something doesn’t look quite right.
Understanding how you’re paid is a fundamental life skill that supports every future financial decision.

For many players, a professional contract is the first time they’ve earned a significant salary.
It’s also often the first time they’ve seen tax deducted, contributed towards a pension or received payments that vary from month to month because of bonuses, appearance fees or contractual incentives.
Without understanding how these payments work, it’s easy for confusion and unnecessary anxiety to develop.
This workshop helps players understand where their money goes, why deductions exist and how to recognise when something may need questioning.
Rather than expecting players to become tax experts, the aim is to help them become informed enough to understand their own finances and engage confidently with the professionals supporting them throughout their career.
