Workshop 19: Tax Planning for Footballers
Understanding Tax with Confidence Throughout Your Career
The more your career develops, the more important it becomes to understand your tax responsibilities.
For many professional footballers, tax becomes increasingly complex as their career progresses.
A first professional contract may be relatively straightforward, but bonuses, sponsorships, image rights, international earnings and additional sources of income can all introduce new responsibilities that many players have never encountered before.
Understanding tax isn’t about becoming an accountant.
It’s about recognising when specialist advice is needed, asking the right questions and avoiding costly mistakes before they happen.
This workshop provides players with a practical understanding of the tax considerations they may encounter throughout their football career, helping them build confidence without overwhelming them with unnecessary technical detail.
-
Tax is one of the few financial responsibilities that every professional footballer will encounter.
Yet it’s also one of the least understood.
As careers progress, players may receive income from a variety of different sources. Whilst PAYE covers much of their salary, additional earnings, sponsorship agreements, image rights, investments or overseas income may all have different tax implications.
Many financial problems arise not because people deliberately avoid paying tax, but because they simply don’t understand their responsibilities.
This workshop helps players recognise when tax becomes more complex, understand the importance of accurate record keeping and appreciate the value of working with appropriately qualified professionals.
The goal is to help players stay organised, informed and confident throughout their career.
-
During this practical workshop, players develop a clearer understanding of how tax applies throughout a professional football career.
Topics include:
Understanding how PAYE works.
When Self Assessment may be required.
Different sources of taxable income.
Bonuses, sponsorships and image rights.
UK tax residency and overseas earnings.
Keeping accurate financial records.
Understanding when specialist tax advice becomes appropriate.
The session provides practical guidance that helps players understand their responsibilities whilst knowing when to seek professional support.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
How tax responsibilities can change throughout a football career.
The difference between PAYE and Self Assessment.
Why additional sources of income may create different tax obligations.
Be able to
Recognise when specialist tax advice may be required.
Identify the types of income that may have different tax implications.
Ask informed questions when discussing tax with professional advisers.
Feel
More confident understanding their tax responsibilities.
Better prepared to manage increasingly complex financial affairs.
Reassured that appropriate planning can help avoid unnecessary problems.
-
Every discussion is based around situations that professional footballers regularly encounter throughout their career.
Examples include:
Signing a first professional contract and understanding PAYE.
Receiving performance bonuses or signing-on fees.
Agreeing commercial sponsorship or endorsement opportunities.
Earning income outside of football.
Moving abroad or playing overseas.
Preparing information for an accountant ahead of a tax return.
These practical scenarios help players understand that good tax planning isn’t about reducing tax at all costs – it’s about understanding responsibilities, staying organised and making informed decisions.
Continuing the Learning
Tax legislation changes and individual circumstances evolve throughout a player’s career, making it important to have trusted educational resources available whenever they’re needed.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
