Workshop 11: Investing Wisely
Understanding Risk, Reward and Long-Term Wealth
Investing isn’t about finding the next big opportunity. It’s about making informed decisions over time.
Professional footballers are often introduced to investing much earlier than most people.
Conversations about shares, property, businesses, crypto and investment opportunities can begin shortly after signing a first professional contract. Whilst some opportunities may be genuine, others may be poorly understood, high risk or simply unsuitable for an individual’s circumstances.
Knowing where to start can feel overwhelming.
This workshop provides players with a balanced, education-first introduction to investing, helping them understand the relationship between risk and reward, ask better questions and avoid making decisions based on hype, pressure or emotion.
The objective isn’t to tell players where to invest. It’s to help them understand how investing works so they can make informed decisions throughout their career.
-
Professional football can create opportunities to build wealth beyond a playing career.
However, investing without understanding the risks can quickly become expensive.
Many players hear investment ideas from teammates, friends, social media or online personalities. Others are approached with opportunities that promise exceptional returns with very little explanation of the risks involved.
Successful investing isn’t about chasing quick wins.
It’s about understanding different types of investments, recognising that every investment carries some level of risk and making decisions that align with personal goals, timeframes and financial circumstances.
This workshop helps players build confidence by focusing on education rather than recommendations, encouraging long-term thinking over short-term speculation.
-
During this practical workshop, players are introduced to the principles that underpin sensible investing.
Topics include:
What investing is and how it differs from saving.
Understanding the relationship between risk and reward.
The characteristics of low, medium and high-risk investments.
Why diversification matters.
Long-term investing versus short-term speculation.
Asking the right questions before making investment decisions.
Recognising opportunities that may be too good to be true.
The session focuses on helping players develop the confidence to understand investment opportunities rather than simply following other people’s opinions.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
The difference between low, medium and high-risk investments.
Why risk, time and potential returns are closely connected.
The importance of diversification and long-term thinking.
Be able to
Ask informed questions before making investment decisions.
Recognise where an investment sits on the risk spectrum.
Assess investment opportunities more critically before committing money.
Feel
More confident discussing investment opportunities.
Better prepared to make informed financial decisions.
Comfortable taking a patient, long-term approach to building wealth.
-
Every discussion is built around situations that professional footballers regularly experience.
Examples include:
A teammate talking about an investment that’s performing well.
Being introduced to a business opportunity through a friend or contact.
Wondering whether to invest or continue building savings.
Feeling pressure to make money “work harder”.
Comparing different investment opportunities with different levels of risk.
Deciding whether now is the right time to begin investing.
These practical examples help players understand that successful investing is rarely about finding the perfect opportunity. It’s about making informed decisions that support long-term financial wellbeing.
Continuing the Learning
Understanding everyday banking is an essential life skill that continues to develop through experience and good habits.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
