Workshop 12: Digital Currencies
Understanding Crypto, Bitcoin and Digital Assets
It’s one of the most talked about financial topics… and one of the least understood.
Over the past few years, digital currencies have become impossible to ignore.
From Bitcoin and Ethereum to NFTs, meme coins and online trading platforms, players are exposed to conversations about crypto through teammates, social media, podcasts and online influencers almost every day.
Some see it as the future of finance. Others see it as speculation.
The reality sits somewhere in the middle.
This workshop takes an education-first approach, helping players understand what digital currencies are, how they work and, just as importantly, the risks involved before committing their own money.
The aim isn’t to persuade players to invest or avoid crypto. It’s to ensure they understand enough to make informed decisions for themselves.
-
Professional footballers are regularly approached with investment opportunities involving digital assets.
The speed at which information spreads online means it’s easy to feel like everyone else is making money whilst you’re being left behind.
Unfortunately, social media often highlights success stories whilst ignoring the risks, volatility and losses that many investors experience.
Without understanding the technology, the terminology or the level of risk involved, players can make decisions based on hype rather than knowledge.
This workshop encourages players to slow down, ask better questions and understand that every financial decision should begin with education rather than emotion.
-
During this practical workshop, players develop a balanced understanding of digital currencies and the wider crypto landscape.
Topics include:
What cryptocurrencies are and how they work.
Understanding blockchain technology in simple terms.
Why digital currencies can experience significant price fluctuations.
The risks associated with investing in crypto assets.
Common scams and misinformation.
Security, digital wallets and protecting digital assets.
How crypto compares with more traditional investments.
The session provides a factual overview without promoting or discouraging investment, allowing players to develop their own informed opinions.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
What cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology are.
Why digital currencies are often highly volatile.
The key risks associated with investing in crypto assets.
Be able to
Recognise common scams and warning signs.
Ask informed questions before investing in digital assets.
Assess whether cryptocurrency aligns with their own financial goals and risk tolerance.
Feel
Better informed about digital currencies.
More confident separating fact from hype.
Comfortable making their own decisions without feeling pressured by others.
-
Every discussion is built around situations that professional footballers regularly encounter.
Examples include:
A teammate recommending a cryptocurrency that’s recently increased in value.
Seeing influencers promote investment opportunities on social media.
Receiving invitations to join private investment groups.
Feeling pressure to invest because “everyone else is doing it.”
Wondering whether crypto should form part of a wider investment strategy.
Being approached with digital investment opportunities that seem too good to be true.
These practical examples help players understand that informed decisions are rarely made in moments of excitement or urgency.
Continuing the Learning
Digital currencies continue to evolve, making it even more important that players have access to trusted, independent educational resources they can revisit whenever needed.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
