Workshop 8: Choosing an Advisor
Knowing Who to Trust with Your Money
Good financial advice can be invaluable. Bad advice can be incredibly expensive.
As a professional footballer, there will be no shortage of people offering opinions about what you should do with your money.
Some will be qualified professionals acting in your best interests. Others may have good intentions but lack the expertise to help. Unfortunately, there are also people who see successful athletes as opportunities rather than individuals.
Knowing the difference is one of the most important financial skills a player can develop.
This workshop helps players understand who does what, how professional advice is regulated and the questions they should ask before trusting someone with important financial decisions.
-
Professional footballers are often introduced to financial advisers, accountants, mortgage brokers, solicitors, wealth managers and investment opportunities far earlier than most people.
At the same time, players may receive advice from teammates, friends, family members or social media personalities, all with varying levels of knowledge and experience.
The challenge isn’t simply finding advice.
It’s knowing which advice is appropriate, who is qualified to provide it and when it’s right to seek a second opinion.
This workshop encourages players to think critically, ask better questions and understand that good advice should educate and empower rather than pressure or persuade.
Making informed decisions starts with choosing the right people to support you.
-
During this practical workshop, players explore how to identify trusted professionals and make informed decisions when seeking financial support.
Topics include:
Understanding the difference between regulated and unregulated financial advice.
The roles of financial advisers, accountants, solicitors and mortgage advisers.
Recognising common warning signs and red flags.
Asking better questions before making financial decisions.
Understanding why independence and transparency matter.
Knowing when specialist advice may be appropriate.
The workshop focuses on helping players become informed consumers of financial advice rather than relying solely on someone else’s recommendations.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
The difference between regulated and unregulated financial advice.
The role of different financial professionals.
Common warning signs that may indicate poor advice or potential scams.
Be able to
Ask informed questions before engaging a financial professional.
Assess whether advice is appropriate for their circumstances.
Recognise when to seek specialist guidance before making important financial decisions.
Feel
More confident choosing trusted professionals.
Better equipped to challenge advice they don’t fully understand.
Reassured that asking questions is an important part of protecting themselves.
-
Every discussion is based around situations that professional footballers regularly experience.
Examples include:
Being introduced to a financial adviser after signing a professional contract.
Receiving investment opportunities through friends or teammates.
Comparing advice from different professionals before buying a property.
Being approached with opportunities that sound too good to be true.
Feeling under pressure to make a quick financial decision.
Deciding whether to seek a second opinion before committing to a major purchase or investment.
These real-world examples help players understand that asking questions isn’t a sign of distrust – it’s a sign of making informed decisions.
Continuing the Learning
Choosing the right professional is rarely a one-off decision. As a player’s career develops, the people supporting them may change, making it important to have trusted information they can revisit whenever needed.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
