Workshop 20: Being the Bank
Managing Financial Pressure from Friends and Family
Sometimes the hardest financial decisions have nothing to do with money.
Professional football brings opportunities that can change not only a player’s life, but the lives of the people around them.
As income grows, so too can expectations.
Players may find themselves being asked for loans, financial help, business investments or support with everyday expenses. These requests often come from people they care deeply about, making them some of the most difficult financial decisions they’ll ever face.
This workshop helps players understand how money can influence relationships, why healthy boundaries matter and how to support others without putting their own financial future at risk.
Being generous is admirable. Feeling responsible for everyone else’s finances isn’t.
-
Money has the power to strengthen relationships, but it can also create tension, misunderstanding and conflict when expectations aren’t managed.
Professional footballers often become the highest earners within their family or friendship group at a relatively young age. As a result, requests for financial help can become more frequent and more complicated.
Many players struggle because saying “no” feels uncomfortable.
Yet continually lending money, paying bills or financially supporting others without clear boundaries can create dependency, resentment and long-term financial pressure for everyone involved.
This workshop encourages players to think carefully about the role money plays within relationships and helps them understand that protecting their own financial wellbeing is not selfish. It’s responsible.
-
During this practical workshop, players explore how money influences relationships and how to navigate financial requests with confidence and empathy.
Topics include:
Why financial pressure often increases as income grows.
Understanding the risks of lending money to friends and family.
Setting healthy financial boundaries.
Supporting others without creating dependency.
Managing difficult conversations around money.
Making decisions that balance generosity with long-term financial wellbeing.
Protecting both relationships and financial security.
The workshop encourages honest discussion around situations that many players experience but often find difficult to talk about.
-
By the end of this workshop, players will:
Know
The financial and emotional risks associated with informal lending.
How money can affect personal relationships.
Why healthy financial boundaries are important for long-term wellbeing.
Be able to
Respond more confidently to requests for financial support.
Set appropriate boundaries whilst maintaining positive relationships.
Make balanced financial decisions that consider both their own future and the needs of others.
Feel
More confident managing conversations about money.
Less guilty about setting healthy financial boundaries.
Better equipped to protect both their finances and their relationships.
-
Every discussion is built around situations that professional footballers regularly experience throughout their career.
Examples include:
A friend asking to borrow money for a business idea.
Family members requesting financial support after signing a new contract.
Feeling responsible for helping everyone around you.
Deciding whether to lend money or offer support in another way.
Managing repeated requests without damaging important relationships.
Balancing generosity with long-term financial security.
These practical scenarios help players understand that there is rarely a simple right or wrong answer. Instead, good decisions come from having clear boundaries, thinking ahead and understanding the long-term consequences of every choice.
Continuing the Learning
Managing financial pressure from others is rarely a one-off conversation. As careers develop and circumstances change, new situations often arise.
Every Munny workshop is supported by three dedicated online resources that help reinforce learning long after the session has finished.
Player Hub
Players can revisit the key concepts, access practical guides, complete action plans and continue developing positive financial habits in their own time.
Family Hub
Parents and families receive resources that explain the topics covered during the workshop and provide practical conversation starters that continue financial education away from the training ground.
Club Hub
Player Care teams, coaches and club staff have access to workshop summaries, player support toolkits and practical guidance to help reinforce learning, recognise when players may need additional support and know when to signpost them.
Together, these resources help transform financial education from a one-off workshop into an ongoing conversation.
